20世纪70年代到80年代中期，直流电气控制系统占据主导地位，80年代以后，由于控制理论及方法均有突破性进展，使交流电机控制得到迅速的发展，逐渐占据了主导地位。交流电机定位控制的研究经历了较长阶段，传统做法是采用机械挡块来定位。目前，在各个行业中所用的定位方式可分为四种:机械定位，电气定位,空气定位，光学定位。而采用电气方式的定位控制系统，现在世界上只有德国具有实际产品，在国内尚属空白。由于电气定位控制系统一般是以数字方式工作的，故可以提高精度，十分简便，易于和计算机，PLC等各种控制电路匹配，多用于数控机床或工业机器人的自动定位机构，适用范围广。
